Organization Guide

Where should you begin? Start by collecting all your photographs, including those overlooked in old cameras, external drives, USB sticks, and that old computer you no longer use. 

Select a spot in your home where there is ample space to work. Remember: this area should be exclusively dedicated to your photo organizing project.

This stage requires thinking about how you would prefer to access your photos in the future. Do you want to find them by date, person, or event? 

After determining the most likely way you’ll access your photos, follow the ABCs of Photo Organizing:

A is for Album. These photos are the best and deserve to be displayed in an album.

B is for Box. These are photos you still want to keep but need not go into an album. Be sure to store them in an archival-quality box.

C is for Can. These are the photos you cull, the ones that are not valuable to you.

S is for Story. This is the most important part—does the photo tell a story?

In this stage, you need to decide how to safeguard your photos. Will you use your smartphone to scan the physical photos? Perhaps purchase a quality flatbed scanner?

Now that your photos are organized and digitized, it’s time to consider their future protection. Decide if you want to retain the physical copies. Think about investing in archival quality storage solutions.
