Light is fundamental in photography. We would like the camera to reproduce the scene as we saw it, but that doesn't always work: often, the highlights are washed out, the shadows are all black, the sky comes out white when it was blue , etc.
We would like to exit automatic mode to achieve better results, but it is not that simple. First, there are all sorts of settings for exposure, all sorts of operating modes for the light meter, and this histogram.
Understand light and how the digital camera captures it. Take photos using the light meter in manual mode so you can understand the interaction between different exposure settings. Use the histogram to verify that the exposure is correct.
During the practical portion of the course, we place participants in light situations which will make them realize that it is difficult to visually estimate the contrast of a scene, that we often have surprises when seeing the histogram and that sometimes we have to realize that the scene we wanted to capture is beyond the limits of our camera.
A camera that can display a readable histogram when viewing photos on the screen is essential as we will use it extensively during the practical session.
A device capable of producing images in RAW format is an asset, because it produces a better result and makes it possible to more effectively see the limits of light capture. An interchangeable lens camera normally meets these two criteria.
It could be a DSLR or a mirrorless camera. Any lens can be used for this workshop. The tripod is not necessary.
